L'objectif de cette recherche consiste à explorer divers types d'habitation communautaire pour aider à gérer la pénurie de logements abordables et adéquats pour les personnes les plus vulnérables de notre société et trouver un moyen concret de planification et d'aménagement de l'habitation sociale dans le parc immobilier urbain. Dans ce but, nous avons étudié deux cas d'habitation communautaire et interviewé 14 personnes, dont trois gestionnaires, cinq intervenants et six locataires. Les principales conclusions que nous avons dégagées de cette recherche sont que le développement de projets d'habitation communautaire doit se faire autant que possible en concertation avec d'autres acteurs afin de permettre la responsabilisation du milieu envers ces citoyens vulnérables et pour permettre un meilleur aménagement de ces types d'habitation à proximité des services, des infrastructures et des réseaux sociaux. Ceci pourrait réduire la concentation spatiale de la pauvreté. De plus, il est important d'avoir une bonne gestion de l'habitation communautaire pour réduire les problèmes sociaux et obtenir un logement et un environnement sain et en sécurité. Finalement, il est important de trouver des fonds stables pour la réalisation du projet d'habitation et pour sa survie. The purpose of this research is to explore various types of community housing to help manage the shortage of affordable and adequate housing for the most vulnerable in our society and to find a concrete way to plan and develop social housing within the current urban housing stock. To this end, we studied two models of community housing and interviewed 14 people, including three managers, five stakeholders, and six tenants. The main conclusions we have drawn from this research are that the development of community housing projects should be developed in consultation with other stakeholders in order to responsibilize the community in regards to these vulnerable citizens and to improve the progression of the development of community housing that is in proximity of services, infrastructure, and social networks. This could reduce the spatial clustering of poverty. In addition, adequate management of community housing is essential in order to reduce social problems, the opportunity to obtain housing and to have access to a healthy and safe environment. Finally, it is important to find stable funding for the realization of a housing project and for its survival.

Cet article décrit le projet Photovoice par lequel des personnes aux  prises avec des maladies mentales ont identifié leurs difficultés face à l’emploi. Le projet s’est déroulé à Ottawa, en Ontario, sous la direction  de l’Association canadienne pour la santé mentale, Section d’Ottawa (ACSM-O). Intitulé  « Voir la réalité derrière l’image », il visait à mettre à  contribution ces personnes afin d’identifier leurs problèmes concernant l’emploi par la voie de photographies et de  narrations.  L’exposition que  le groupe a créée met l’accent sur la discrimination et les obstacles qu’il a vécus, sur l’appui nécessaire pour contrer ces barrières ainsi que sur  les aspirations de chacun de ses membres.  Le projet a eu des conséquences positives sur le plan individuel et a produit une exposition informative et émouvante.

Why  do  people  who  are  consumers  of  mental  health  services  want  to volunteer?    Some  want  a  chance  to  get  out  of  their  home,  develop  some routine in their lives and keep busy.  Some want a chance to meet new people, to  brush  up  on  their  skills  and  to  give  back  to  the  community.  Finally,  some want to feel useful, find a way to increase their self-confidence and self-esteem to  help  them  prepare  for  entry  or  re-entry  into  the  paid  workforce.    Whatever the  reason,  these  individuals  have  amazing  talents  and  abilities  and  are  quite capable of making a contribution to the community.

Assisting volunteers and clients to build helping relationships can be challenging. However, if volunteers are given appropriate training, with a focus on defining the volunteer ’s role and developing interpersonal skills,  the outcome can be immensely rewarding.
